Ecommerce Profit Margin Benchmarks by Category (2026)
Typical gross and net profit margin ranges for online stores, broken down by product category, so you can see how your own numbers compare before you list or scale.
Most ecommerce stores run a net profit margin of roughly 8% to 15% after all costs, with 20%+ considered healthy. Gross margin (after product cost only) is usually much higher, often 40% to 70%, but platform fees, shipping, advertising, and returns are what pull the true net margin down.

How to read these benchmarks
Gross margin only subtracts what the product itself costs you. It looks healthy almost everywhere, which is exactly why so many sellers overestimate their profit. Net margin is what actually reaches your bank account after platform and payment fees, outbound shipping, fulfillment, advertising, and a reserve for returns. The gap between the two columns above is where most ecommerce businesses quietly lose money.
Use these ranges as a sanity check, not a target. If your calculated net margin sits well below the band for your category, your pricing, fees, or ad costs need attention. If it sits above, make sure you have not left out a real cost such as returns or freight.
Methodology
These are general planning ranges synthesized from widely reported ecommerce industry figures and typical fee and fulfillment structures. They are meant as directional benchmarks for individual sellers, not audited financial data for any specific company. Your results depend on your suppliers, channel, ad efficiency, and return rate.
